I have just returned from a wonderful week at Ashokan fiddle camp to study, play, and hang out with some fantastic musicians including Dirk Powell, Riley Baugus, Rafe Stefanini, Red Stick Ramblers, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. What a blast! I am glad to share with you some fall dates with all three of my bands: Mayfly (www.myspace.com/mayflygirls) , Katie Trautz and the Tall Boys (New Band Name coming soon!) (www.katietrautz.com), and Wooden Dinosaur (www.woodendinosaur.tumblr.com). I have been playing tons of old time music, and will be playing some shows and dances with a new stringband. Keep your eyes and ears out for this one.... Also- Mayfly records a new album this fall! We're so excited to share our new songs and fiddle tunes with you. More news about this to come....and we will be opening for Dirk Powell and Riley Baugus in January at the Montpelier Folk Music Festival hosted by the Summit School of Traditional Music and Culture: www.summit-school.org. We will be sending along a kickstarter video for support for this festival soon... *I have moved on from the directorship at the Summit School of Traditional Music and Culture (www.summit-school.org), but will remain on the board of directors as an artistic director, and I will work as a fiddle and singing teacher for the school. I am very excited to announce that I have signed on to work with Charisma Artist Agency (www.charismaartist.com). It's an honor to be on their team of musicians and agents! Hope to see you soon! -Katie Lots of news to share:
1) I am going to Sweden to study Swedish Fiddle in May, then a train to Norway to visit friends and play shows! I've had enough Ikea and meatballs for the year, I'm going to see the real deal. 2) Wooden Dinosaur had a great tour last week. We sold out Lizard Lounge, a popular Cambridge venue and hit up Black Door in Montpelier on Saint Patty's day. Then Portland, ME where we rocked a house concert with our new addition: Asa Brosius on pedal steel. He's a great steel player, but he's even better car company for the drives. 3) Check out this Wooden Dinosaur album review by Dan Bolles of Seven Days (Thank you Dan!): http://www.7dvt.com/2012wooden-dinosaur-spaces 4) Katie Trautz and the Tall Boys tour Vermont this weekend. Catch us in Burlington Friday March 30th at the Radiobean, and Headroom stages in Brattleboro Saturday with our friends Rusty Belle. Limited Edition EP is for sale, come out to the show, bring our five favorite songs home with you! Happy Spring, Katie Wooden Dinosaur, indie rock/Americana outfit, has had some great opportunities lately. VPR with Jane Lyndholm (VPR.net), Opening for Low Anthem and Joe Pug (NEW FAVORITE MUSICIAN!) at Heberton Hall in Keene, NH Oct. 19th. We had a blast! And Oct. 28th Montpelier College Gym, Benefit for Hurricane Irene Flood Relief with Devil Makes Three and Toughcats, a show NOT to be missed. 7pm. I promise to wear my Zebra costume!
Wooden Dinosaur is really a gem, I'm so glad to be a part of this band. www.woodendinosaur.com. We have an album coming out soon, with our six-piece band (horns, drums, bass, fiddle, guitar, and more) with special guests, including Montpelier's own: Asa Brosius on pedal steel. Whoot Whoot! Hope you get a chance to hear us sometime, we're an unconventional, untraditional, unassuming rock band. Check out these videos-the first one is an interview I had with a traveling research project called the Perennials Project. Fall is upon us, we are back in our homes after months of outdoor play, travel and recording. This summer has blown by, but was very fruitful for my ensembles. Now we're ready to refine our recordings, and plan next year's shows, while enjoying the apples and end of summer harvest.
Katie Trautz and the Tall Boys: Just off a weekend tour, we played at new venues in New England including Brewbakers Cafe in Keene NH, Positive Pie in Montpelier, VT, and Rockwood Music Hall, NYC. I must say, I have a new favorite band: the Aoife O'Donovon band! Check the singer of Crooked Still out, she has a great new ensemble we got to share the stage with at Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan. Hopefully we can get her to VT soon. Next on our Tall Boys list is the release of our EP, which we recorded during Hurricane Irene. What a great way to spend a few rainy days! We will be doing the finishing touches soon and the album will be ready in the next couple months. Thank you Ben Rogers for super recording powers! Wooden Dinosaur has a few shows coming out, one in Brooklyn on Sept. 10th. And one in Putney on the 11th. Wooden Dinosaur album should be ready this fall/winter too, I'm really happy with the way it has turned out. I can't wait to share it! We have the 6-piece band recorded on this one, with some special guests including Asa Brosius from JP Harris and the Tough Choices. Stay tuned for the album release shows planned for this winter/spring. Mayfly has two shows this fall including one at the beloved Bread and Butter Farm, South Burlington, VT on September 23rd. 7pm. We're also playing at City Market in Burlington for the 3rd (or 4th?!) consecutive year. Support local farmers, the flood has ruined crops and left farmers struggling this fall! Summit School of Traditional Music and Culture: This is my work when I'm actually home, www.summit-school.org, a non-profit folk music school. Check us out! We offer 24 classes three semesters a year for all ages. Registration just opened for the fall, and I'll be teaching Old-time Fiddle and American Harmony Singing. Other classes include New Orleans Brass Band, Banjo, Guitar, Songwriting, Drumming, Irish Music, Improvisation and more... There are plans for some flood relief benefits in the area, I may be playing one at the Intervale in late Sept/early October. Hope to see you out there- Katie |
